Nothing is original. This an excerpt taken from a Jazz theory Book written by German academic, Pohler
"The first half of the 20th century is the epoch of authentic jazz.
Black musicians created a way of harmonical thinking of their own, which, in this form, had never existed before. These sound combinations they had developed, revealed musical regularities which had completely unknown up until this time.
The roots of this epoch making overthrow were to be found in the black slave songs of the unite states of America. These "Blue notes" and "Blue Chords" of their music (which had actually been registered in writing only since the middle of the 19th century) were the clue to a completely new harmonical system.
For the first time in music history, the playing practice of those black "pioneers" of the authentical epoch of jazz practiced an absolute giving equal weight to all the 12 tones i.e.: the whole musical material.
* In the first decenials of the 20th century a small group of Classical / Romantical composers had a similar aim: by means of intellectual experiments and constructions their so called "12 tone music" should throw off the tonal burden of past epochs thus resulting in a giving of equal weight to the 12 tones of our musical system.
Finally they remained confined to themselves since they always got caught in the conventional way of harmonical thinking.
Uptill today, a worldwide appreciation by a large number of listeners was denied, since these experiments often sound too dry and constructed.
Being free from the burden of a classical and conventional music education, black Jazz musicians dealt rather intuitively and spontaneously with their harmonical thinking method.
A conscious theoretical registration of these regularities (by means of writing or teaching) could not have ensued at this time, the entire process developed unconsciously (above the heads of the practical players).
The process of experimenting and listening along with trials and errors created this unconscious Basic-Harmonical-Mode-Of-Thinking, which especially fit the practical demands of authentic Jazz.
However, this consequent practical utilization of the Basic Harmonical regularities had already all the possibilities inherent that rendered the step from the unconscious Jazz specific way of thinking to a generalized thinking method (being applicable to history).
Pohlert's Basic Harmony generalizes the unconscious specific perceptions coming from the Jazz practice and puts them into a consciously perceivable form by means of writings and graphs, in order to make this form teachable and ready to be transmitted.
The resulting Basic-Harmonicalcal-Mode-Of-Thinking can be utilized in all stages of music (within the 12 tone system) of the past, present and (as far as scientific prophecy allows) future."
